Millions of Muslims perform Hajj or Umrah every year. Preparing spiritually takes months. Preparing medically should take no longer than a single appointment, but leaving it too late can cost you your visa. Icon Travel Clinic in Chigwell, Essex offers same-appointment vaccination and official certification.

If you're travelling from Essex, East London or the surrounding area, here is exactly what you need, when you need it, and where to get it done.

The One Vaccine You Cannot Travel Without

The Meningitis ACWY vaccine is mandatory for both Hajj and Umrah pilgrims travelling from the UK. Without a valid certificate of vaccination, you will not be granted a pilgrimage visa and you may be refused entry at the Saudi border.

This is not a recommendation. It is an entry requirement enforced at the border and checked during the visa application process.

The certificate rules for 2026 are:

Requirement

Rule

Timing before arrival

10 days minimum

Conjugate vaccine validity

5 years

Polysaccharide validity

3 years

Certificate requirement

Stamped by provider

At Icon Travel Clinic in Chigwell, we issue the correct certificate on the day of your appointment. It is ready to use with your visa application immediately after the 10-day window has passed.

Meningitis ACWY Vaccine Pricing

The Meningitis ACWY vaccine at Icon Travel Clinic is £59 per dose. Most pilgrims require 1 to 2 doses depending on age. This includes vaccine administration and your official health certificate, issued on the day of your appointment with no waiting period.

NEW FOR 2026: COVID-19 & Seasonal Influenza Requirements

In February 2026, the Saudi Ministry of Health issued new Health Certificate requirements for all international pilgrims. These are now mandatory for Hajj 2026 (24–29 May 2026) and strongly recommended for Umrah.

What you need:

Vaccine

Requirement for 2026

Meningitis ACWY

Mandatory. Must be given at least 10 days before arrival.

COVID-19

Mandatory. One dose of updated vaccine administered on or after 1 January 2025.

Seasonal Influenza

Mandatory if not administered after 1 September 2025.

All three vaccines must be recorded on a "Medical Fitness Certificate" signed by your healthcare provider. This certificate is required as part of your Hajj visa documentation via the Nusuk platform.

Why This Matters More Than Ever in 2026

Meningococcal disease is not just a theoretical risk. The UKHSA confirmed 5 cases of meningococcal W disease between February and March 2025 in people who had recently returned from Saudi Arabia or in their close contacts in England and Wales.

In May 2024, 12 confirmed cases of invasive meningococcal disease were reported, with 3 in the UK. All were linked to travellers who had performed Umrah in Saudi Arabia. Most had not received a MenACWY vaccine before they travelled.

Meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia are severe conditions that can kill or leave people with life-changing disabilities. Getting vaccinated is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself and your family at home.

Respiratory illnesses, including "Hajj cough," spread rapidly in the crowded conditions of pilgrimage. The Saudi Ministry of Health's addition of flu and COVID-19 vaccine requirements reflects their response to respiratory clusters documented during the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

Other Recommended Vaccines for Saudi Arabia

Beyond the mandatory vaccines, our pharmacists will review your full vaccination history at your appointment and may recommend the following based on your itinerary and health background.

Hepatitis A

Recommended for most travellers. Spreads through contaminated food and water. Available as a single vaccine or combined with Hepatitis B. See our Hepatitis A vaccine page.

Typhoid

Recommended for travellers eating outside hotel environments or spending time away from major city centres. See our Typhoid vaccine page.

Polio (Optional but Advised)

While not mandatory for UK residents, polio vaccination is mandatory if you are transiting through countries such as Pakistan or Nigeria for more than 4 weeks. If your pilgrimage itinerary includes extended stays in polio-endemic regions, discuss this with our pharmacist.

Health Risks During Hajj That No Vaccine Can Prevent

Heat and Dehydration

There is an increased risk of heat stroke and dehydration during summer months. Hajj 2026 falls in late May and June when temperatures in Makkah can exceed 45°C. Pilgrims should consume adequate liquids and salts and bring basic medicines with them.

Respiratory Illness

A viral lung infection known as Hajj cough is experienced by many pilgrims and can range from a mild inconvenience to a severe illness that interferes with performing the rites. Wearing a mask in crowded areas and practising hand hygiene reduces your risk.

MERS-CoV

Pilgrims should avoid consuming raw or undercooked animal products. Should fever, coughing or breathing difficulties develop within two weeks of leaving Saudi Arabia, contact a GP or NHS 111 immediately and mention your recent travel history. Dial 999 in an emergency.

Prescription Medicines

Some prescribed or over-the-counter medicines available in the UK are controlled substances in Saudi Arabia, and UK prescriptions are not accepted in-country. If you rely on regular medication, speak to our pharmacist at your appointment and arrange a GP letter before you fly.

Saudi Arabia Travel Tips

Beyond vaccinations, preparing for a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia requires practical planning. Here are essential travel tips to make your journey safer and more comfortable.

Pack Strategically for the Heat

Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing in neutral colours helps reflect heat and respects local dress codes. Bring high-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and quality sunglasses. Pack more water bottles than you think you'll need—dehydration can develop quickly in extreme heat, especially during ritual activities that require prolonged standing.

Manage Jet Lag and Sleep

The time difference between the UK and Saudi Arabia is significant. Adjust your sleep schedule gradually before departure. Once in Saudi Arabia, expose yourself to natural light at strategic times to help your body adapt. Poor sleep weakens your immune system and increases susceptibility to respiratory illnesses and other health issues.

Maintain Hygiene in Crowded Environments

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially before meals and after using shared facilities. Carry hand sanitizer and antibacterial wipes. Avoid touching your face unnecessarily. In crowded areas, particularly in Masjid al-Haram and around the Kaaba, respiratory droplets spread easily. Wearing a mask during peak times can significantly reduce your risk.

Stay Informed About Local Conditions

Check UK Foreign Office advice before and during your trip. Register with your airline and your country's embassy. Keep emergency numbers saved in your phone. Saudi Arabia's healthcare system is modern and well-equipped, but having this information on hand ensures you can access help quickly if needed.

Bring Medications and First-Aid Supplies

Pack a comprehensive travel health kit including pain relief, anti-diarrhoea medication, antihistamines, and any personal prescription medications in original packaging with a doctor's letter. Include blister treatments, electrolyte sachets, and throat lozenges. Hajj cough can be treated more effectively if you have supplies on hand immediately.

Understand Cultural and Religious Considerations

Dress modestly in line with Saudi customs and Islamic requirements. Be respectful of prayer times and fasting during Ramadan. Learn basic Arabic phrases to communicate with pilgrims from other countries. Understanding and respecting local customs reduces stress and helps you integrate better with fellow pilgrims, which contributes to your overall wellbeing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need the MenACWY vaccine for Umrah as well as Hajj?

Proof of MenACWY vaccination is required for Hajj. For Umrah, entry requirements vary by visa type and airline. However, given the documented outbreaks and the Saudi Ministry of Health's positioning of meningitis vaccination as an essential health barrier, it is strongly not recommended to travel without it. Many Umrah organisers and airlines now require evidence of vaccination before boarding.

How long is the MenACWY certificate valid?

If you received a conjugate vaccine, which is the standard type now given in the UK, your certificate is valid for 5 years. If the vaccine type is not indicated on the certificate, it will be considered valid for 3 years only. Always check your existing certificate before assuming it is still in date.

How far in advance should I book?

Book at least 6 weeks before your departure. All mandatory vaccines must be administered at least 10 days before you arrive in Saudi Arabia. Some additional vaccines require multiple doses spread over several weeks. Even if your travel is sooner than 6 weeks, contact us as we can often accommodate last-minute appointments.

What happens if I return from Saudi Arabia feeling unwell?

If you or anyone at home becomes unwell with symptoms of meningitis within two weeks of returning from Saudi Arabia, contact your GP or NHS 111 immediately and mention your recent travel history. Dial 999 in an emergency.
