Hajj and Umrah Vaccines in Essex 2026: What UK Pilgrims Must Know Before They Travel

If you are travelling from Essex, East London or the surrounding area, here is exactly what you need, when you need it, and where to get it done.
The One Vaccine You Cannot Travel Without
The Meningitis ACWY vaccine is mandatory for both Hajj and Umrah pilgrims travelling from the UK. Without a valid certificate of vaccination, you will not be granted a pilgrimage visa and you may be refused entry at the Saudi border.
This is not a recommendation. It is an entry requirement enforced at the border and checked during the visa application process.
The certificate rules for 2026 are:
The vaccine must be administered at least 10 days before arrival in Saudi Arabia
A conjugate MenACWY vaccine certificate is valid for 5 years
A polysaccharide vaccine certificate (no longer available in the UK) is only accepted for 3 years
The vaccine name and type must be recorded in a patient-held vaccine record that includes the traveller's full name, stamped by the healthcare provider
At Icon Travel Clinic in Chigwell, we issue the correct certificate on the day of your appointment. It is ready to use with your visa application immediately after the 10-day window has passed.
Why This Matters More Than Ever in 2026
This is not a box-ticking exercise. There is an active and ongoing risk.
The UKHSA confirmed 5 cases of MenW disease between February and March 2025 in people who had recently returned from Saudi Arabia or in their close contacts in England and Wales.
Meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia are severe conditions that can kill or leave people with life-changing disabilities.
In May 2024, 12 confirmed cases of invasive meningococcal disease were reported, including 3 in the UK, all linked to travellers who had performed Umrah in Saudi Arabia. Most had not received a MenACWY vaccine before they travelled.
The pattern is consistent and the UKHSA has issued active guidance to UK pilgrims ahead of each season since. Getting vaccinated is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself and your family at home.
Other Recommended Vaccines for Saudi Arabia
Beyond MenACWY, our pharmacists will review your full vaccination history at your appointment and may recommend the following based on your itinerary and health background.
Hepatitis A
Recommended for most travellers. Spreads through contaminated food and water. Available as a single vaccine or combined with Hepatitis B. See our Hepatitis A vaccine and combined Hepatitis A and B pages.
Typhoid
Recommended for travellers eating outside hotel environments or spending time away from major city centres. See our Typhoid vaccine page.
Health Risks During Hajj That No Vaccine Can Prevent
Heat and Dehydration
There is an increased risk of heat stroke and dehydration during the summer months. Pilgrims should consume adequate liquids and salts and bring basic medicines with them. Hajj 2026 falls in May and June when temperatures in Makkah can exceed 45°C.
Respiratory Illness
A viral lung infection known as Hajj cough is experienced by many pilgrims and can range from a mild inconvenience to a severe illness that interferes with performing the rites. Wearing a mask in crowded areas and practising hand hygiene reduces your risk.
MERS-CoV
Pilgrims should avoid consuming raw or undercooked animal products. Should fever, coughing or breathing difficulties develop within two weeks of leaving Saudi Arabia, contact a GP or NHS 111 immediately and mention your recent travel history, or dial 999 in an emergency.
Prescription Medicines
Some prescribed or over-the-counter medicines available in the UK are controlled substances in Saudi Arabia, and UK prescriptions are not accepted in-country. If you rely on regular medication, speak to our pharmacist at your appointment and arrange a GP letter before you fly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need the MenACWY vaccine for Umrah as well as Hajj?
Yes. Proof of MenACWY vaccination is required for Hajj. While it is currently possible to perform Umrah without the vaccine, it is not recommended due to the increased risk of meningitis associated with pilgrimages and past outbreaks. Many Umrah organisers and airlines also require evidence of vaccination before boarding.
How long is the MenACWY certificate valid?
If you received a conjugate vaccine, which is the standard type now given in the UK, your certificate is valid for 5 years. If the vaccine type is not indicated on the certificate, it will be considered valid for 3 years only. Always check your existing certificate before assuming it is still in date.
Can I get my MenACWY vaccine on the NHS for Hajj?
The NHS recommends vaccinations for Hajj and Umrah, however many pilgrims prefer private clinics to avoid long wait times. At Icon Travel Clinic, the vaccine and official certificate are provided together at your appointment.
How far in advance should I book?
Book at least 6 weeks before your departure. The vaccine must be given at least 10 days before you arrive in Saudi Arabia and some additional vaccines require multiple doses spread over several weeks. Even if your travel is sooner than this, contact us as we can often accommodate last-minute appointments.
What happens if I return from Saudi Arabia feeling unwell?
If you or anyone at home becomes unwell with symptoms of meningitis within two weeks of returning from Saudi Arabia, contact your GP or NHS 111 immediately and mention your recent travel history, or dial 999 in an emergency.
