Two people have died in a UK meningitis outbreak. Find out which countries require the MenACWY vaccine, the symptoms to watch for, and the real cost of skipping vaccination before you travel.

In March 2026, a meningitis B outbreak in Canterbury, Kent, claimed two young lives: an 18-year-old sixth-form student and a 21-year-old university student. Thirteen confirmed cases were reported over a single weekend, with more than 30,000 students, families, and staff contacted by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). The outbreak was linked to a social venue and spread with devastating speed.

Meningitis is not just a local risk. It is a global one. If you are planning international travel to Africa, the Middle East, or any mass gathering, the meningitis vaccine may not just be recommended. For some destinations, it is a legal requirement to enter the country. This guide covers what the disease is, which countries require vaccination, the vaccines available, symptoms to recognise, and the very real cost of not being protected.

What Is Meningitis: Why Is It So Dangerous?

Meningitis is an infection of the meninges, the protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. When bacteria invade the bloodstream or brain linings, doctors classify this as invasive meningococcal disease, the most serious and life-threatening form.

Bacterial meningitis is rarer than the viral form but far more deadly. It can progress from the first symptoms to death in under 24 hours. Among those who survive, around 1 in 5 are left with permanent complications including hearing loss, brain damage, limb amputation, epilepsy, and cognitive impairment. 1 in 6 patients with bacterial meningitis do not survive.

There are multiple strains. The most relevant to travellers are A, C, W, and Y (covered by the MenACWY vaccine), and strain B (the strain behind the current UK outbreak, covered by the MenB vaccine).

Recognise the Symptoms: Every Hour Counts

Meningitis can develop and kill within 24 hours. If you or someone you are with shows any of the following, call 999 or go directly to A&E. Do not wait for all symptoms to appear:

• Sudden, severe headache unlike any before

• High fever with cold hands and feet

• Stiff neck: unable to touch chin to chest

• Sensitivity to light or loud noise

• A rash that does not fade when pressed with a glass (the "glass test"): this is a medical emergency

• Confusion, drowsiness, or difficulty staying awake

Countries Where the Meningitis Vaccine Is Required or Strongly Recommended

The following countries require proof of MenACWY vaccination for entry or for specific visa categories. Travelling without it can mean being denied boarding, turned away at the border, or having your visa refused:

🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia: MANDATORY. Required for ALL Hajj and Umrah pilgrims. Proof of MenACWY vaccination within the previous 5 years must be submitted with your visa application. No certificate = no visa, no pilgrimage.

🇬🇲 The Gambia: MANDATORY. Proof of vaccination required for entry.

🇮🇩 Indonesia: MANDATORY. Required under specific travel and immigration conditions.

🇱🇧 Lebanon: MANDATORY. Vaccination certificate required at border.

🇱🇾 Libya: MANDATORY. Vaccination certificate required at border.

🇵🇭 Philippines: MANDATORY. Required under certain entry conditions.

The African Meningitis Belt: Strongly Recommended

Sub-Saharan Africa is home to the world's most active meningitis zone, known as the "meningitis belt", stretching from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east, covering 26 countries and over 400 million people. The risk is highest during the dry season, December through June, which is peak travel season for many UK visitors.

High-risk countries include: Senegal, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, Sudan, South Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Central African Republic, DR Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi.

Healthcare workers and aid workers travelling to the meningitis belt are advised to get vaccinated year-round, not just during dry season.

The vaccine is also strongly recommended for: university students studying abroad, backpackers in crowded hostels, anyone attending large international gatherings or festivals, and travellers with compromised immune systems.

MenACWY vs MenB: Which Vaccine Do You Need?

Meningococcal ACWY (MenACWY) Vaccine: Protects against four strains (A, C, W, and Y). This is the vaccine required for Saudi Arabia's Hajj/Umrah visa and recommended across the African meningitis belt. In the UK it is offered free on the NHS to young people aged 13 to 25, but vaccine uptake has fallen significantly since the Covid pandemic. Protection lasts approximately 5 years. Must be given at least 10 to 14 days before travel.

MenB Vaccine: Protects against the B strain, the most common strain in the UK and Europe, and the one behind the current Kent outbreak. Offered free on the NHS to babies born on or after 1 July 2015. Most teenagers and adults were not offered it at school. A full private course of two doses costs approximately £220. While not typically required for international travel, it is highly relevant for anyone who missed childhood vaccination.

The Real Cost of Not Getting Vaccinated

Some people hesitate at the cost of a private vaccine. Here is the financial and human reality of what bacterial meningitis actually costs:

With the MenACWY vaccine: £59. One appointment. Full protection for 5 years.

Without vaccination: Average hospital treatment and ICU admission costs exceed £10,000 in the UK. In the US, hospitalisation alone averages over $15,000. That is before rehabilitation, lost income, and long-term care.

Beyond financial cost, the consequences can be permanent: hearing loss (one of the most common after-effects, often irreversible), limb amputation caused by septicaemia cutting off circulation, brain damage and cognitive difficulties, epilepsy, depression and PTSD reported frequently by survivors, and death: 1 in 6 bacterial meningitis patients do not survive.

The two people who died in the Kent outbreak were aged 18 and 21. Meningitis does not discriminate by age or fitness. The time to protect yourself is before exposure, not after.

How Far in Advance Should You Get Vaccinated?

The MenACWY vaccine takes 10 to 14 days to provide full protection. The ideal time to vaccinate is 2 to 4 weeks before departure. For Saudi Arabia's Hajj and Umrah visa, the vaccination must be documented within the previous five years.

Do not leave it until the week of your trip. While same-day and walk-in appointments are available at Icon Travel Clinic in Chigwell, Essex, the vaccine's protection needs time to build before you fly.

Had the vaccine at school? The MenACWY provides protection for approximately 5 years. If you received it at age 13 to 15 and are now planning travel to a high-risk destination, you may need a booster. Bring any previous vaccination records to your appointment.
