About Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE)
Tick-Borne Encephalitis affects the central nervous system and is primarily transmitted by infected Ticks in rural and forested areas. If you're heading to places where TBE is common or planning outdoor activities in these regions, getting vaccinated should be a top priority to avoid infection.
Will I Need a Tick-Borne Encephalitis Jab to Travel?
Yes, if you're visiting areas with a high risk of TBE, especially if you'll be outdoors or staying in forested areas for a long time. This is crucial for hikers, campers, and anyone spending time in rural environments. High-risk areas for TBE include forested regions of countries like Austria, the Baltic States, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Northern China and Japan.
FAQs
What is Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE)?
Tick-Borne Encephalitis is a viral infection of the central nervous system transmitted primarily through the bite of infected Ixodes ticks. It is found across forested areas of Central and Eastern Europe, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Poland, the Baltic states, and Scandinavia, as well as Russia, China, Japan, and South Korea, particularly from spring through to autumn.
Who is at risk of TBE?
Travellers who spend time outdoors in forested or rural areas of endemic regions are most at risk. This includes hikers, campers, cyclists, and those working in agriculture or forestry. Risk is greatest between April and November when ticks are most active.
How is the TBE vaccine given?
The TBE vaccination course consists of three doses. The second dose is given one to three months after the first, and the third dose is given five to twelve months after the second. An accelerated schedule is available for those with limited time before travel.
How long does TBE vaccine protection last?
After completing the primary course, a booster is recommended after three years. Subsequent boosters may be given every three to five years depending on continued risk and age.
Can TBE be transmitted through food?
Yes. In rare cases, TBE can be transmitted through consuming unpasteurised dairy products from infected animals. Travellers to endemic regions should avoid unpasteurised milk and cheeses as an additional precaution.
Is tick repellent enough protection against TBE?
Tick repellents containing DEET, wearing long sleeves and tucking trousers into socks, and checking for ticks after outdoor activity all reduce your risk. However, for travellers with significant exposure in endemic areas, vaccination provides the most reliable protection.
