What is Typhoid Fever?
Typhoid fever is a serious bacterial infection caused by Salmonella typhi. It spreads through food and water contaminated with the faeces of an infected person. It is most common in countries with poor sanitation and limited access to clean water, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and the Philippines in Asia; Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa; and Peru, Bolivia, and Guatemala in Latin America. Symptoms include a sustained high fever, headache, abdominal pain, and fatigue.
Will I Need a Typhoid Jab to Travel?
If you're heading to regions where typhoid is widespread or where sanitation isn't up to standard, the typhoid vaccine is recommended.
This includes backpackers, adventure seekers, missionaries and anyone spending a long time in such areas.

FAQs
What is typhoid fever?
Typhoid fever is a serious bacterial infection caused by Salmonella typhi. It is spread through contaminated food and water and is most prevalent in parts of South Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
Do I need the typhoid vaccine for my trip?
The typhoid vaccine is recommended for travellers visiting areas where the disease is common, particularly if you will be eating local food, drinking local water, or staying with family or friends rather than in hotels. Your clinician will assess your risk based on your destination and travel style.
What are the symptoms of typhoid fever?
Symptoms include a sustained high fever, headache, abdominal pain, and fatigue. In some cases, a skin rash of flat, rose-coloured spots may also appear. Symptoms typically develop one to three weeks after exposure and can worsen if the infection is left untreated.
What typhoid vaccines are available?
Two main options are available: an injectable typhoid polysaccharide vaccine (one dose, effective for two to three years) and an oral live attenuated vaccine (three capsules taken on alternate days, effective for one year). At Icon Travel Clinic we will advise on the most suitable option for you.
How long before travel should I get vaccinated?
The injectable typhoid vaccine should ideally be given at least two weeks before travel to allow full immunity to develop. The oral vaccine requires the course to be completed at least one week before departure.
How long does typhoid vaccine protection last?
The injectable typhoid vaccine provides protection for approximately two to three years. The oral vaccine provides protection for around one year. Boosters are recommended if you continue to travel to high-risk areas.
Are there any side effects from the typhoid vaccine?
Side effects from the injectable vaccine are generally mild and may include soreness at the injection site and occasionally a low-grade fever. The oral vaccine can sometimes cause mild gastrointestinal symptoms. Serious side effects are rare.
